COURSE DESCRIPTION This course will prepare students for entering today’s ever-changing and fast-paced world. Students will update technology skills using Microsoft 2010 software. Career knowledge, job preparation, the application and interviewing process, money management and dealing with credit and finance will also be emphasized.

OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE AND MAJOR COURSE WORK
This course is designed to prepare students to navigate the financial decisions they will face today and tomorrow. Students will also gain software/business/employability knowledge for personal use and career use.
The following subject matter will be covered:
GRADING
THE BASICS Failure to comply by the following rules will be accompanied by points being taken away from the participation grade, and/or a detention.
CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS/ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS
The student handbook outlines exact procedures for these expectations. Since this class is a hands-on computer lab class, attendance is critical. If a student is absent, the student must arrange with the instructor to complete any missed assignments. The curriculum for the class is accessible on any computer with an Internet connection.
Students are graded on Employability/Work Habits as indicated in the Employability Skills Evaluation listing below.
COMPUTER LAB/OFFICE SAFETY CLASSROOM AGREEMENT
1. Look out for potential safety hazards (i.e., cords coming loose from under the desks, leaning too far back in your chair).
2. Always look at your chair and hold the chair seat before sitting down.
3. Do not roll in your chair any farther than your personal work area.
4. Follow the manufacturer’s directions when operating any equipment.
5. Avoid distractions when operating office equipment.
6. If you have a tingling sensation, notice smoke, or smell something burning while you are operating office equipment, turn off the equipment and report the problem to your instructor.
7. Know where the power switches are located on all equipment.
8. Do not overload extension cords and power outlets.
9. Do not touch unprotected wires.
10. Do not have food or drink (except water) in the computer lab.
11. Do not abuse classroom computers, printers, desks, chairs, or other equipment in any way. This includes unplugging, moving, and shutting off the equipment without permission. It also includes writing on any of the above.
12. Please keep your work “G-rated” at all times.
13. Do not download files from the Internet or any other source, or change computer settings, without permission from my instructor.
14. Do not log into the computer at the beginning of the hour until given permission by the instructor.
15. You are allowed to log in with your student ID and password ONLY.
EMPLOYABILITY SKILLS/WORK HABITS EVALUATION Employability skills are those traits that are looked upon favorably by an employer – positive attitude, neat appearance, good work habits, etc. This class will help you develop these traits so you will be better prepared for college and/or a career.
The following traits/behaviors will reduce your employability grade during the week, and consequently the trimester:

- Personal Finance - This section will cover planning personal finances, banking and credit, insurance, investing financial resources, and protecting your finances. The curriculum students will use for this course is in the Mona Shores On-Line Learning Center at www.moodle.monashores.net/
- Software Integration - This section will cover computer skills using Microsoft Office 2010 with emphasis on Word and Excel.
- Career and Interviewing Skills – These sections will cover the career search, the development of a resume and cover letter, and the interview process.
GRADING
- The final exam is worth 20% of the trimester grade.
- Assignments, tests, projects, and employability/work habit grades are categorized and assigned points. The High School grading scale will be used.

- Passes are given only at appropriate times (ex: NOT when the teacher or other students are presenting information to the class).

- Access only those programs approved by the instructor, including approved web sites.
- All other entries into the computer network will be considered a violation of this policy which could result in my possibly losing credit for this class.
- Exit programs and network properly.
- Remove any papers, writing utensils, etc. and store them properly.
- Properly remove any flash drives and store them properly.
- Push in your chair before you leave.
- Store any textbooks properly.
- Remain in your chair until dismissed.
EMPLOYABILITY SKILLS/WORK HABITS EVALUATION Employability skills are those traits that are looked upon favorably by an employer – positive attitude, neat appearance, good work habits, etc. This class will help you develop these traits so you will be better prepared for college and/or a career.
The following traits/behaviors will reduce your employability grade during the week, and consequently the trimester:
- Misuse of equipment
- Tardies
- Unexcused absences
- Not beginning work promptly
- Being unprepared for work (i.e., having all the required supplies)
- Off task
- Having food or beverage in the room
- Not demonstrating positive listening skills
- Quitting work early
- Inappropriate behavior (i.e., excessive socialization, disruptive behavior, cheating, inappropriate language, behavior problems with substitute teacher, leaving the classroom early or without permission).
- Leaving work area without cleaning up
- Violating any other of the items listed in the Computer Lab/Office Safety section of this syllabus.
